美しい墓

 

わたしが死んだのはただ美のため    
墓にゆけば疾く                                 
真(まこと)のために死せる人               
となりの部屋に横たわりて                                          

やさしくきけり  我 が死せる故を           
「美のため」—我はこたえぬ            
「我は真理のためにーふたつはひとつ」      
かの人いえり—「はらからのごとき我ら」 

かくて夜半に会いし身内の如           
棺へだて語りあえば           
唇苔むして                                         
やがて名前もおおわれぬ                  

I died for Beauty―but was scarce
Adjusted in the Tomb,
When One who died for Truth, was lain
In an adjoining Room―                                   

He questioned softly “why I failed”?
“For Beauty”, I replied―
“And I for TruthーThemself are One-
 We brethren, are”, he said―

And so, as Kinsmen met a Night―          
We talked between the Rooms―
Until the Moss had reached our lips―
And covered up―our names―
